Class Dojo - As the 3rd and 4th grade teachers have done, the 5th grade will be using ClassDojo. This program rewards students for demonstrating positive behaviors, and allows for students to reflect on their loss of feedback points for negative behaviors. Parents can connect and view their child's feedback points, see posts on our Class Story, and send messages to the 5th grade team.

Students will start the week with ten points for each day of the coming week. For example, this first week is only three days long, so they started the first day of school with 30 points. Students maintaining a specified percentage of points at the end of the week will be rewarded with a special activity. As we progress through the school year, the required percentage increases as the expectations of our students increases. The most common reason for point loss is not being prepared for class, which could mean coming without pencil and paper, talking out of turn, or not having completed homework.

To help ensure a successful year, please help to emphasize these basic rules with your child.

Technology - This year we will use lots of technology! Students will use all the technology available to use this year to expand their knowledge of technology and how it can be used constructively in our daily lives.

From time to time, homework may be assigned that requires the use of a computer. In order for us to plan these activities and plan appropriate accommodations, please complete our short two question technology survey as soon as possible! Pick up a paper version, complete it at: https://goo.gl/forms/pnm2uQusBr9TVXwD3, or use this QR code and your smartphone to access the survey.

State tests and MAP testing is all completed online, therefore we will be utilizing the computers as often as possible to ensure students are comfortable with different features that can be associated with testing. Computers will be utilized for unit tests, math facts and various online programs.

As we all know, the use of technology is not without its setbacks. In the event of technological difficulties or issues, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will do everything we can to help!

Duke Spirit - On Fridays we will show our Duke Spirit by wearing our colors - maroon and white!

Volunteers- We are in need of some help during the school day. We understand that many jobs and/or other life commitments just don’t provide parents with the freedom to spend time in the classroom. However, if your days are somewhat flexible and you are brave enough to give us a little time, we would LOVE to have you! Please let us know if you are interested as soon as possible and are available Mondays and Fridays from 12-1pm. We look forward to a successful year!

Newsletter - We will inform you of news and events that involve your fifth grader through a bi-weekly newsletter available on the McCormick website and/or through your email, and Class Dojo.

Cell Phone Policy - Cell phones must be kept in student lockers during the school day. At the first offense the phone will be held by the teacher until the end of the day. At the second offense, the phone will be sent to the office for further discipline by the principal.

Essentials and Band -  Once a week our students will have art, music, library and physical education. Students will have the opportunity to begin band this year! Watch for more info in the coming months!
