The Karl J. Olsen, M.D. Scholarship was established in the winter of 2001 in memory of Dr. Karl J. Olsen. His family and medical associates expressed a desire to provide for a scholarship in his memory, as he had been so appreciative of the education he received as a student at Wellington. While a student in the Wellington School system, Dr. Olsen was active in band, orchestra, drama, and publications. He was President of his junior class and graduated in 1940 as Valedictorian of his class. He pursued his education at The Ohio State University majoring in electrical engineering from 1940 through 1943. His college education was put on hold as he trained to become a pilot and navigator in World War II in the Army Air Corps. After the war, he returned to OSU where he completed his B.A. and M.D. Dr. Olsen was on staff at the Mayo Clinic and later joined the staff of the Cleveland Clinic as head of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
