Carl N. Oney was a lifelong resident of Wellington and attended Wellington schools until family obligations necessitated that he cease his public education after 9th grade. He valued education and passed that passion onto his children, who, in turn, passed it on to their descendants. Carl was a custodian and a bus driver for Wellington School District (now Wellington Exempted Village Schools) from 1957-1972.
Marion C. Oney grew up in Oberlin, but she resided in Wellington for her entire adult life. She was the Assistant Librarian at Herrick Memorial Library from 1953-1972. Marion shared Carl's vision for continuing education.
All four of Carl and Marion's children were graduates of Wellington High School who went on to higher education and had successful careers because their parents instilled in them the idea that education was invaluable. Their children (Ruth Weaver - Class of 1952, Carl Oney - Class of 1954, Eleanor Broome - Class of 1959, and Sheila Wiseman - Class of 1962) established this scholarship in their memory.
